What Mary Poppins can teach you about choosing an Office Manager

Do you wish somebody could come in and get everything organised for you, spit spot?  You may be replacing an Office Manager or PA who is no longer with you, or you might need to create a vacancy as your business grows.

If you look around and see chaos or need somebody to handle the daily support functions so you, and your team, can do what they do best, you need to find that special kind of person!

An Office Manager, PA, or Senior Administrator is often a pivotal role for most SME’s, so it is essential to avoid costly mistakes when hiring.

What to look for:

  • Mary Poppins looked after 3 children.  Make sure your candidates have run whole office or have been a team PA.  Some great executive PA’s have excellent skills but struggle to juggle workloads if they are used to working for one individual.
  • Are they no-nonsense?  Let’s face it, Mary Poppins was a bit bossy.  We all know that even the best of us need a proverbial kick every so often.  For the sake of politeness, let’s call it authoritative.  Employ somebody who will give as good as they get!
  • A spoonful of sugar?  We took Mary’s nagging because it was always dished out with a huge dollop of positivity and a smile.  Go for somebody with a sunny disposition because Monday misery isn’t good for anyone.
